The Hierarchy of Clothes: A Retired American Expat’s Comfort War in Brazil
Reading Time: 4 minutesLiving in Brazil as a retired American has taught me many things, but none more important than this: comfort always wins. While my Brazilian wife and her sisters dress like every grocery run might turn into a fashion campaign, I remain loyal to elastic-waist shorts, legendary t-shirts, and a carefully managed hierarchy of “good clothes.” This humorous culture-clash story dives into retirement, expat life in Rio, stubborn American comfort habits, and the ongoing domestic battle between style and survival.
Too bad. My laundry cycle is a closed-loop system of blatant favoritism. I wear the favorites, I wash the favorites, and thanks to the miracle of modern appliances, they are back at the front of the drawer by sunset. It’s a literal revolving door of comfort. If the other clothes wanted to be worn, they should have been roomier, cuddlier, or featured a small embroidered pony. Until then, they can stay in the dark. I have a date with a Green Boy and a couch.
