Leonardo da Vinci’s quote

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” 

This quote brings a lot to mind—especially the old principle known as KISS: Keep it simple, stupid. The idea fits his way of thinking remarkably well. Over five hundred years ago, he understood something we still struggle with today.

We tend to overcomplicate everything: searching for the perfect solution, planning endlessly, thinking—and overthinking—until momentum is lost. Sometimes the best approach is to strip things back to the basics and simply act. This aligns closely with Stoic philosophy: focus on what you can control and let go of the rest.

I recently read Walter Isaacson’s biography of Leonardo (and previously posted my book review). One of the strongest themes in the book is how deeply Leonardo pursued understanding through careful observation and reduction—finding clarity by getting closer to first principles rather than adding complexity.

This quote also reminds me of a moment from my early twenties. Two guys were talking, and one was proudly showing off his new Rolex. The other asked, “What time is it?” The first guy answered. The second glanced at his own watch and said, “You’re right—thanks. Timex. Twenty-five dollars.”

I laughed my ass off, but the point stuck. Function over flash. Clarity over noise. Simplicity, when done well, really is sophistication.
