Winston Churchill
“You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.”
Few historical figures embodied that quote more than Winston Churchill.
The more I read about Churchill, the more extraordinary he becomes. He was stubborn, outspoken, often controversial, and rarely afraid to say exactly what he believed. He made mistakes, serious ones at times, but what set him apart was that he owned them. He never hid behind carefully crafted language or tried to please everyone in the room.
That is what gives this quote its weight.
Standing for something will always create friction. Honesty can sound harsh. Conviction can look arrogant. People will resent you for speaking plainly, especially when it challenges what they want to hear. But a life spent trying to avoid criticism usually becomes a life spent avoiding principle.
Churchill understood that. Agree with him or not, he stood behind his beliefs and accepted the consequences that came with them.
One of the best books I’ve read on him is Churchill: Walking with Destiny, and I’ll have a full review of it coming soon.
