100 Books on History, Leadership, Civilization, and Human Resilience: My Lifetime Reading Roadmap

Reading Time: 3 minutes

A personal reading roadmap through history, leadership, power, human resilience, civilization, and the search for meaning

Over the past several years, I’ve noticed a pattern in the books that capture my attention. Whether I’m reading about Roman emperors, American presidents, financiers, explorers, novelists, soldiers, or ordinary people facing extraordinary circumstances, the same questions keep appearing.

  • What makes a great leader?
  • Why do institutions survive—or collapse?
  • How do civilizations rise and fall?
  • What allows some people to endure incredible hardship?
  • How should we live knowing that life is finite?

The books below represent both my completed reading journey and the road ahead. Some I’ve already read and highly recommend. Others remain on my shelf waiting for their turn. Together they form a map of the ideas and themes that interest me most: leadership, history, power, resilience, character, democracy, faith, freedom, and human nature.

Some of these I have published posts on and I have over 30 written and scheduled every Saturday from now through the end of the year. My scheduled list grows as I complete them, not necessarily in order that I have read them. The list below of unread books are in my queue and I suspect if I don’t add anymore this will take me about 18 months which means I will continue to have reviews always readyo to go.

Check out the list, let me know what you think, you may have a few you want to try and I have a recommended list at the bottom. I limited that to about 10 but I would recommend all of these. The only tough read so far was Meditaions, see the review on that for why.

What This Reading List Says About Me

After putting this list together, several themes emerge again and again:

Leadership and Character

Washington, Lincoln, Adams, Grant, Roosevelt, Churchill, Bush, Henry V, Caesar, and even figures like Rockefeller and Morgan all explore the relationship between character and power.

The Rise and Fall of Institutions

Rome, the Ottoman Empire, the American Republic, banking dynasties, democratic governments, and modern bureaucracies all face the same challenge: survival.

Human Endurance

Books like We Die Alone, Unbroken, Man’s Search for Meaning, Gulag, and A Thousand Splendid Suns remind us what human beings can survive.

Meaning and Purpose

Frankl, Tolle, Albom, Ruiz, Goodall, and Coelho all ask different versions of the same question: How should we live?

Civilization and Its Fragility

From The Fate of Rome and The Vanquished to Brave New World, 1984, and World War Z, many of these books examine what happens when institutions break down, and societies are put under stress.

The Essential Ten

If I had to recommend just ten books from this entire list, they would be:

  1. Washington: A Life — Ron Chernow
  2. The Path Between the Seas — David McCullough
  3. Man’s Search for Meaning — Viktor Frankl
  4. Rubicon — Tom Holland
  5. SPQR — Mary Beard
  6. The Vanquished — Robert Gerwarth
  7. Demon Copperhead — Barbara Kingsolver
  8. The Godfather — Mario Puzo
  9. Thinking, Fast and Slow — Daniel Kahneman
  10. The Book Thief — Markus Zusak

Together, they capture the subjects that fascinate me most: leadership, power, history, resilience, civilization, and the enduring search for meaning. They are also the books most likely to reward a second—or third—reading as life experience changes what we see in their pages.
