What’s the weirdest movie you’ve ever watched?

Well, this being a family blog, I will leave porn out of the mix. Kind of.

When I was maybe 12, my parents were out, a couple of friends were over, and this was back when HBO was still something fairly new and exciting. HBO had launched in 1972 as a cable subscription service, long before we had anything resembling today’s streaming services.

There were no streaming profiles, no kids’ accounts, no “Are you sure you want to watch this?” warnings. You turned on HBO and whatever was playing was whatever was playing.

And somehow, three of my friends and I stumbled onto A Clockwork Orange, starring Malcolm McDowell.

We had absolutely no idea what this movie was about.

If I remember correctly, it looked a little futuristic, which probably should have been our first clue that we were in over our heads. But we were 12-year-old boys, so we weren’t exactly looking for clues.

There were boobs.

That was all the plot development we needed.

Forget the dystopian future. Forget the psychological themes. Forget the violence, social commentary, Beethoven, and whatever else Stanley Kubrick was trying to tell us.

There were boobs.

And for four 12-year-old boys who had discovered HBO without adult supervision, we were quite content to sit there for the rest of the night.

Looking back now, it is pretty funny to think about. I eventually learned that A Clockwork Orange was actually a very controversial and influential movie, based on Anthony Burgess’s novel. At 13, however, I was not exactly prepared to appreciate Stanley Kubrick’s artistic vision.

I was prepared to appreciate HBO.

That’s about it.

So now I’m curious. What is the weirdest movie you ever watched, especially one you saw when you were way too young to understand what you were watching? Rate this post, leave a comment, and tell me your story.

I remember watching clockwork orange too, a long time ago. It was weird but I think the weirdest movie I’ve seen was a Horror movie called Hellraiser based on a novel by Clive Barker called Hellbound Heart, which I read, and it was even weirder. BTW I could like and could not write a comment on your previous post. I don’t know what was wrong.

Oh A Clockwork Orange. I cannot hear the song Singing in the Rain without thinking of Roddy McDowell singing it and then kicking a guy.

    1. I was 12 at the time, I only remember boobs

The Last House on the Left (1972 version). The weirdest. Second place Pi (the film)  The film explores themes of religion, mysticism, and the relationship of the universe to mathematics. Gobsmacked me.

    1. I’ll look it up; I’ve never heard of it. Then again, I was 9.
