“It’s not a lie if you believe it.” – George Costanza

Quotes usually come from famous people in science, politics, and literature, to name a few, and George, although a fictional character, would seem like a ridiculous quote in a comedy. The quote is from Season six where Jerry takes a polygraph about watching the show Melrose place.
However, if you look closely at the quote and think about it, you see meaning in everyday life. You can’t watch the news and see known falsehoods being stated to sell the lie and get people to believe an untruth, and unfortunately, it works. This is, of course, the most extreme and dangerous way it is used, but I’m sure we all do it every day just to convince ourselves to do something we know is wrong, but we do it anyway. How about “Hey, I’m not feeling well, so I can’t make it.” Yeah, we all have a little sniffle, but we use that as an excuse to get out of something we don’t want to do. We all do it, the little lie to make us feel better and not hurt the other person.
I picked this because it carries serious weight and real meaning, even if it came from a sitcom that made us laugh. The tagline is “a show about nothing,” but if you watch it, you will find many real-world examples.
