People buy things they don’t need with money they don’t have to impress people they don’t like.” — often attributed to Will Rogers – I like this quote because I think we all get lost in this consumer mentality. I know I did over the years.
I think minimalism depends on the person and on what it means to each person. In my case over the last 12 years I went from a home in New Hampshire of 3000 square feet to now living in Rion and retired n about <1000 square feet.
I will say I liked the journey, and I like having less stuff. In between, we spent 10 years in Florida, and during that time, we scaled down there, too, but this was the major scale-back. Some people may find this too much downsizing, some not enough. I guess it depends on your needs. Sometimes it is not the stuff, it is the space. It would be nice to have just a bit more room. I have all the stuff I need.
What I have found over the years is that we always live with more than we need, and often we consume to fill the space. Now we consume based on need and available space. I’m not missing anything, but it wasn’t a concept I said I liked, and I believe it lets us do it.
