Disclaimer here – I’m a Soccer (Futebol – As they say in Brazil) Newbie. I’m doing this series with the help of AI and adding to my prompts the knowledge I glean from my son, the family expert. I listen to what he says about teams and players. I take all of that and add it to my series leading up to the World Cup. Here is Part 2 in the series. Don’t forget to check out the page and comment.
This is the official breakdown for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. With the expanded 48-team format and 12 groups, the group stage is no longer just a warmup—it’s a high-stakes sprint where one bad day can send a giant home.

Group A: The Aztec Opener
Teams: Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, Czech Republic
- Who Advances: Mexico (Home field at the Azteca is a cheat code) and South Korea.
- Who Gets Eliminated: Czech Republic and South Africa. Bafana Bafana has heart, but they open against Mexico in the furnace of Mexico City—a “baptism of fire” they likely won’t recover from.
Group B: The Tactical Chess Match
Teams: Canada, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Qatar, Switzerland
- Who Advances: Switzerland (The kings of group stage consistency) and Canada.
- Who Gets Eliminated: Bosnia & Herzegovina and Qatar. While Bosnia can cause problems, Canada’s pace with Alphonso Davies will be too much for this group to handle.
Group C: The Samba Cruise
Teams: Brazil, Morocco, Haiti, Scotland
- Who Advances: Brazil and Morocco. This might be the most “chalk” group in the tournament.
- Who Gets Eliminated: Scotland and Haiti. Scotland will bring the noise, but Brazil and the 2022 darlings, Morocco, have too much technical quality.
Group D: The Star-Spangled Fight
Teams: USA, Paraguay, Australia, Türkiye
- Who Advances: USA and Türkiye. Türkiye is the dark horse of the entire tournament, and the USMNT’s home advantage is massive.
- Who Gets Eliminated: Paraguay and Australia. This is a brutal draw for the Socceroos.
Group E: The Teutonic Test
Teams: Germany, Curaçao, Ivory Coast, Ecuador
- Who Advances: Germany and Ecuador.
- Who Gets Eliminated: Ivory Coast and Curaçao. Ecuador has become a qualifying powerhouse in CONMEBOL; they’ll squeeze past the Ivorians.
Group F: The Orange Express
Teams: Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, Tunisia
- Who Advances: Netherlands and Japan.
- Who Gets Eliminated: Sweden and Tunisia. Japan’s recent friendly win at Wembley (beating England 1-0 in March) shows they are ready to slay giants.
Group G: The Red Devils’ Last Dance
Teams: Belgium, Egypt, Iran, New Zealand
- Who Advances: Belgium and Egypt.
- Who Gets Eliminated: Iran and New Zealand. Mo Salah vs. Kevin De Bruyne is the headline here; both should see the Round of 32.
Group H: The Iberian Heavyweights
Teams: Spain, Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia, Uruguay
- Who Advances: Spain and Uruguay.
- Who Gets Eliminated: Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde. Saudi Arabia is in turmoil after firing Hervé Renard just months before the tournament.
Group I: Les Bleus’ Business Trip
Teams: France, Senegal, Iraq, Norway
- Who Advances: France and Norway. Haaland finally gets his World Cup moment and delivers.
- Who Gets Eliminated: Senegal and Iraq. It feels wrong to bet against Senegal, but a healthy Norway with Erling Haaland and Martin Ødegaard is a different beast.
Group J: The Messi Farewell?
Teams: Argentina, Algeria, Austria, Jordan
- Who Advances: Argentina and Austria. Ralf Rangnick has turned Austria into a high-pressing nightmare for opponents.
- Who Gets Eliminated: Algeria and Jordan.
Group K: The Group of Death
Teams: Portugal, DR Congo, Uzbekistan, Colombia
- Who Advances: Portugal and Colombia.
- Who Gets Eliminated: DR Congo and Uzbekistan. Luis Díaz and James Rodríguez are on a mission to prove Colombia belongs in the elite tier.
Group L: The Tuchel Era
Teams: England, Croatia, Ghana, Panama
- Who Advances: England and Croatia.
- Who Gets Eliminated: Ghana and Panama. Ghana arrives in a state of total turmoil after a 5-1 thrashing in March. England should walk this, even with Thomas Tuchel’s “scrappy” early results.
The “Third-Place” Factor
Remember, in this 48-team format, the 8 best third-place teams also advance. Keep an eye on Senegal (Group I) and Ivory Coast (Group E)—they are the most likely to sneak into the knockouts through the back door!
