Storylines to Watch

  • Record-pace scoring: The tournament has produced more than 100 goals through the first 36 matches, putting it on track to be one of the highest-scoring World Cups in recent memory.
  • Spain looking to bounce back: After being held 0–0 by debutants Cape Verde, Spain sits third in Group H and needs a win over Saudi Arabia today to keep pace.
  • Belgium also needs a result: Belgium drew 1–1 with Egypt in their opener and faces Iran today in Group G, another match with no margin for error.
  • Curaçao’s historic point: The tournament’s smallest nation by population earned its first-ever World Cup point with a 0–0 draw against Ecuador, with goalkeeper Eloy Room recording a tournament-high save tally in the match.
  • Japan eliminates Tunisia from contention: Japan’s 4–0 win over Tunisia (the 1,000th match in World Cup history) leaves Tunisia winless and bottom of Group F with one match to play.
  • Germany through to the knockout rounds: A dramatic late winner over the Ivory Coast clinched Germany’s place in the Round of 32 — their first knockout-stage appearance since their 2014 title run.
  • Golden Boot race heating up: Early scoring leaders include Jonathan David (Canada), with Messi, Mbappé, and Haaland all off the mark as well.
  • Co-hosts faring well: Mexico, Canada, and the United States have all won at least one match, with Mexico and the U.S. already through to the knockout stage.

Standings and results are current as of the morning of June 21, 2026, before today’s matches kick off.
