An end-to-end physical encounter — with the woodwork struck at both ends — was deadlocked at 0-0 until Manchester United’s Amad Diallo latched onto a through ball and finished coolly in the 90th minute to send the Ivory Coast bench erupting. Ecuador, regarded as one of the tournament’s stronger defensive sides, was left stunned. The result leaves Ecuador needing a win in their next match to stay on track.

Sweden 5–1 Tunisia 📍 Estadio BBVA, Monterrey, Mexico
Sweden was utterly dominant in Monterrey, dismantling Tunisia 5-1 in a second-half blitz. Yasin Ayari scored twice, while Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres — two of Europe’s most feared strikers — both got on the scoresheet. The result sends Sweden to the top of Group F on goal difference and sets up a mouth-watering second-round clash with the Netherlands on June 20.

📰 Storylines to Watch
- Germany’s statement. A 7-1 win with Havertz, Musiala, and Undav all on the scoresheet is a warning shot to the rest of the tournament. Germany have +6 goal difference after one game, the best of any team so far.
- 19 goals in one day. Sunday’s four matches produced 19 goals — the highest single-day total of the 2026 World Cup to date. The expanded 48-team format is delivering on its promise of drama and entertainment.
- Curaçao made history. Despite the 7-1 scoreline, Livano Comenencia’s equaliser for Curaçao was their first-ever goal at a FIFA World Cup. A proud moment for the island nation in their debut tournament.
- Japan’s comeback earns point vs Netherlands. Coming from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Daichi Kamada’s 89th-minute equaliser was the drama of the day. Japan once again proved they belong at the top level, and Group F is now completely unpredictable.
- Sweden emerge as Group F dark horses. A 5-1 demolition of Tunisia from Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres — two of the most dangerous strikers in club football — puts Sweden in serious contention. Netherlands vs Sweden on June 20 could define the group.
- Amad Diallo’s 90th-minute winner. One of the breakthrough moments of the tournament so far. Ivory Coast join Germany on three points in Group E after a goal that will be replayed all week.
- Australia vs USA on June 19. The biggest Matchday 2 clash just got even bigger. Both teams sit on 3 points and a +2 or better goal difference. The winner of that fixture in Seattle would take firm control of Group D heading into the final group game.
- Spain vs Cabo Verde — the shock of Day 5? Cape Verde, in only their second-ever World Cup, held Spain to a 0-0 draw in Atlanta — a stunning result against one of the pre-tournament favorites. Results still being confirmed at time of publication.
