When people ask who inspired me most, I never know how to answer. Some people point to a teacher, an athlete, a celebrity, or a parent. I always found that a little strange. Even Charles Barkley famously said, “I’m not a role model.” I think he was making an important point: no one else is responsible for the life you choose to live.

That doesn’t mean I walked through life alone. I had people I could trust, people I could ask for advice, and people who loved me. Their support mattered. They helped shape me, challenged me, and sometimes gave me a different perspective when I needed it. For that, I am grateful.

But inspiration is different from guidance.

At the end of the day, I was the one who had to make the decisions. I paid for my education. I worked my job. I dealt with my mistakes and enjoyed the rewards of my successes. No one could study for me, work for me, or live my life for me.

Maybe that’s why I never had a single hero or role model. I admired qualities in many people, but I never wanted to become someone else. I wanted to become the best version of myself.

If I had to answer the question honestly, I would say that many people helped shape who I became, but the person who inspired me most was myself. Not because I think I’m extraordinary, but because every day I had to decide to keep moving forward. Life is ultimately our own responsibility. We can learn from others, lean on others, and love others, but sooner or later we each have to become the person we are waiting for.

In that sense, I was both the student and the teacher, the challenge and the solution, the person searching for direction and the one responsible for finding it.
