What’s a time you followed your gut and it turned out to be exactly right?
In the spring of 2014, I decided to move to Florida. On paper, it was a simple decision: leave the cold New England winters and take an opportunity to work in a warmer climate. But there was a lot more riding on that choice than a change of weather.
At the time, I had two children who were entering stages of life where they needed to grow beyond the environment they had always known. The move pushed all of us out of our comfort zones. They had to build lives of their own, find apartments, take on responsibilities, and learn to stand on their own feet. One went on to earn a master’s degree, and the other built a successful career in law enforcement.
The move also came after my divorce, a period when life felt uncertain and many paths were possible. Around that same time, I met someone who was also moving to Florida. That relationship eventually led to marriage, and I got another son.
Looking back more than twelve years later, that single decision changed the course of multiple lives. My children are educated, employed, and established adults. My wife and youngest son are now living in Brazil, reconnecting with their roots, while I am learning a new language, experiencing a new culture, and enjoying a chapter of life I never could have imagined back in 2014.
When I made the move, I couldn’t have predicted any of that. I simply had a feeling it was the right next step.
For once, my gut knew exactly what it was doing.
