What’s a quote that perfectly describes your outlook on life?

For me, it’s the KISS principle:

“Keep It Simple, Stupid.”

It’s not elegant, but it’s practical.

Look, I’m not splitting the atom here. My whole approach to surviving more than 40 years in the workforce was pretty simple. Do what I need to do, never think, “That’s not my job,” and stay employed. After all, I like to eat.

I always focused on doing the best job I could, staying relevant, and learning whatever I needed to learn. That mindset carried me through every day of my career.

I also never took much crap from anybody. If I thought something needed to be said, I usually said it. If it was true, I said it. That isn’t always the best approach, but I’ve never been a fan of sugar-coating things. That’s probably why modern business phrases like “full transparency” make me laugh. Either you’re being honest or you’re not.

The KISS principle has always made sense to me because it’s practical. It doesn’t try to sound profound. It just works.

It also fits perfectly with the quote I wrote about on Monday:

“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”

— Wayne Gretzky

I keep it simple, and I keep taking my shot. That simple approach kept me employed for more than four decades, gave me opportunities I never expected, and helped provide a pretty good life.

Sometimes the simplest advice really is the best.

  1. Sounds good!

  2. I have a 2nd round interview next week for a job that wasnt on my radar, but I think because I am always willing to learn more and never say that’s not my job….my team looks at me like the right person. Now, I just need to believe I am the right person!! Have 20 more years of work in me.

    1. If you have that mindset, you are the right person. Show what you bring to the table other than just the structure of a resume; everybody has those. Maybe ask things like what new projects are out there, what skills are needed that you can help with, or what is lacking that you can work on.

Mine is a bit different. There’s two for me. 1) If there’s nothing you can do about it, don’t worry about it and accept it/ learn how to deal with it. 2) Don’t complain about things that you had an opportunity to do something about and didn’t.
So many unexpected things happen in our lives (not just work) that this has served me well. Take on the things you can and try to understand and accept the things you can’t.

    1. Those are both good. Thanks for sharing.
