When I was a kid, my dad gave me a piece of advice that I’ve never forgotten.
He looked at me and said,
“If you ever get arrested, tell the police not to let you out. It’s safer for you in there.”
It probably sounds harsh.
Maybe it was.
But it’s been more than fifty years since he said it, and I’ve thought about those words many times.
He wasn’t telling me to expect trouble.
He was telling me to stay out of it.
His point was simple. If I ever found myself in a situation bad enough to be arrested, whatever was waiting for me outside was probably worse than spending a night in jail.
That message stuck with me.
I never really got into trouble. I never did many of the typical high school things like drinking underage, collecting speeding tickets, or causing problems at school.
I wasn’t a saint.
Far from it.
But I always knew where the line was, and I also knew not to cross it.
Looking back, I don’t think my dad was teaching me about jail.
He was teaching me about consequences.
Sometimes the best advice isn’t complicated. It isn’t wrapped in inspirational quotes or motivational speeches.
Sometimes it’s one sentence that stays with you for the rest of your life.
