If the salary was the same, what job would you be doing right now and why?
This is a funny follow-up to yesterday’s question, “Share a hobby you’ve picked up recently — what got you into it?” It also happens to connect with Friday’s question, “What’s the weirdest coincidence you’ve ever experienced?” Apparently, these prompts are starting to follow a theme.
Since I’m retired, I don’t really have a salary anymore, at least not in the traditional sense of getting paid to go to a job every day. So if money were completely removed from the equation, I wouldn’t change what I’m doing now.
The small web-development business I’m trying to build is exactly what I’d choose to do. And if it never becomes much more than a fun project that lets me learn, build things, and keep my technology skills sharp, I’m perfectly happy with that.
I have no desire to go back to a full-time job. I like being retired. I like exploring, learning new things, and doing it all at my own pace. There’s something pretty nice about working because you want to rather than because you have to.
If Old Guy Web Works grows, great. If you’ve read my other posts about it, you already know my goal isn’t to build the next big web-development company. I’d be perfectly happy with a handful of customers, providing good personal service and spending only a few hours a week doing something I enjoy.
At this point in my life, that sounds like a pretty good salary—even if nobody actually calls it one.
