What’s the Most Annoying Trope in Books or Movies?
Oh, this one is easy: the bad guys are winning, the good guys are getting their asses kicked, and then, at the last possible second, the good guys rally and save the day.
We’ve seen this movie. We’ve read this book. Hell, we practically know the exact moment when the music changes and the hero suddenly finds the strength to defeat twelve heavily armed villains with nothing but determination and a conveniently located stockpile of weapons.
Enough already.
Every once in a while, I want to see the good guys get completely squashed. I want them to have a really bad day. Maybe the villain actually wins. Maybe the world doesn’t get saved. Maybe justice takes the day off and everyone goes home disappointed.
Who doesn’t like to see little Timmy cry as he leaves the theater clutching his half-eaten, stale popcorn?
The last time I remember this playing out particularly well was Planet of the Apes. I mean, come on. What could be better than the apes taking over humanity and controlling the world?
I love apes. Hell, I’m probably only a couple of evolutionary plot twists away from being one myself.
I want to see the apes win again.
And if that makes me the bad guy in this story, so be it. At least I won’t have to sit through another last-minute inspirational speech followed by the obligatory happy ending.
