Coffee with Kevin: Weekly Reflections on Life, Work, and Everything Else

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Saturday mornings hit differently. The pace slows down, the coffee stays hot a little longer, and there is finally time to reflect instead of just keeping up with the week.

Welcome to Coffee with Kevin—my weekly space to step away from news headlines, charts, and rankings to share personal stories, practical lessons, and observations.

Some weeks, we’ll explore life in retirement, living in Brazil, photography, books, or family. Other weeks, I’ll draw on four decades in technology, leadership, and change management—offering perspectives that remain relevant long after leaving the office.

Think of this as two friends catching up over a fresh cup of coffee: honest conversation, stories worth sharing, and an idea or two to take with you into your weekend.

Grab your cup, settle in, and let’s dive into this week’s conversation: Memory

I Miss the Snow, Just Not Enough to Go Back

I was sitting outside the other day, just having a coffee and watching people go by, when a memory from where I grew up popped into my head.

I grew up in New Hampshire. Winters could be cold and filled with snow.

As a kid, it was great for sledding, snowball fights, and building snow forts. During the Blizzard of ’78, I was 14 and a freshman in high school. The area was closed for the week, cars were stranded everywhere, and I think we had about three feet of snow in 24 hours.

There was no school for the week, and we built a tunnel from one end of the front yard to the other.

Snow was great as a kid and not so great as you got older. It is terrible to shovel, especially if you had a big driveway, and even worse to drive in.

I do not miss snow, and I haven’t seen it for the last 13 years. I don’t miss it at all, and I will probably never see it again.

However, even as an adult, there was always something cool about sitting by the window with a hot coffee, watching the snow come down, perfectly still, covering everything with a blanket of white, fluffy powder.

I do miss that.

Just not enough to ever go see it again.

Yes there is something calming, soothing about snow coming down.

    1. yes, I could watch it while I prepared myself for hours of shoveling it!

        Lol 😂

  2. I would love it if it would just flurry on Christmas Eve here. And then disappear into rain the moment it touched the ground. It would be so pretty. I love snow too, but not enough to leave Hawaii lol

    1. I hear that. I guess I can go to the south of Brazil and see that but my memory is good enough there is no need.

      1. Yeah, they get snow on the top of the mountains on the Big Island, so I guess I could go over there as well, but nah.

  3. I grew up in a very cold place with a lot of snow (northern Sweden) but I love skiing and I had fun in the snow as a kid so I miss it a little bit. However, we go skiing in Colorado sometimes.

    1. A nice vacation retreat in a snowy climate is great. I just never want to shovel it or drive in it.

      1. I agree that was less fun. My brother have had several car accidents due to winter conditions including he did not see the road turning because everything was, and crashing into moose twice.

      2. into a moose! That is lucky to walk away from that. Those animals are massive.

  4. Living in the ‘Southern Tier’ of New York State, I have to say that I love the winters.
Yes, it can be brutally cold. Yes, it normally snows a lot – but I simply love the different seasons we get; much more than the seasonal dullness of London we lived with for decades.
Snow? Be prepared! Last winter it snowed pretty much every day for 6 months … normally trivia, but the occasional beast of a storm … it’s mid September, but I’ve already got the snow blowers/shovels out, winter clothes staged and took delivery of a whole ton of pet-safe ice melt this week.

    Bring. It. On.

    1. Always prepared, and now in retirement, you have the time. Just don’t fall with the dogs and break that wrist again.
