They say brevity is the soul of wit. They also say that five lines, a bad pun, and a bouncy rhythm can make almost anything sound a little more absurd.
Starting today, I’m kicking off a new regular feature: Limerick Wednesday.
Whether we’re poking fun at modern workplace technology, poking holes in everyday gripes, or navigating retirement and life down in Rio, these quick five-liners are here to give your midweek routine a fast, lighthearted chuckle.
To kick things off, here’s a little taste of what’s in store:
The Gringo’s Rio Retirement
A gringo retired from the race,
Traded tech for a much slower pace.
With pão de queijo for a lift,
The bikinis left him stiff,
He’s in Rio with no personal space!
Now It’s Your Turn (Reader Prompt)
A good limerick needs a spark—a funny situation, a pet peeve, or a character who probably should’ve known better. And that’s where you come in!
Got a gripe about modern life? A funny story from your week? A ridiculous situation you’d love to see turned into a five-line rhyme?
Drop your ideas in the comments below! Give me a character, a situation, or a silly outcome, and I’ll pick my favorites to turn into limericks for an upcoming Wednesday post. If I do not get suggestions, then I will make one up each week.
