Perseverance Through the Ages: My Time Travel Choice

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Daily Prompt: If you could go back in time to live, what time frame would you pick and why?

I would choose to go back to 1919. Arriving just after the end of World War I, I would be ten years old—just the right age to witness the arrival of the Great Depression. While that might sound like a somber choice, I am drawn to the idea of experiencing a much simpler way of life. It was a time when people were profoundly grateful for what they had and weren’t afraid of hard work; there is a reason they are called the “Greatest Generation”.

Living through that era would place you on the cusp of monumental historical achievements, both good and bad. You would likely be of age to serve in World War II, but even for those who didn’t fight, the sense of community and the spirit of “chipping in” for a greater cause must have been astonishing.

Ultimately, I would want to experience the sheer perseverance of that era—to see how a generation weathered the deepest economic struggles and the largest global conflict, only to emerge on the other side to build a massive middle-class boom and an unprecedented wave of innovation.

Do you think society today can rise to the achievements and endure the struggles that defined the past? We may soon have the chance—whether for better or for worse.

About Kevin, I spent 40 years in FinTech before retiring to

Rio de Janeiro to trade software releases for a front-row seat

to the beautiful absurdity of life in Brazil. This blog is my digital

porch, a place for unpolished commentary on book reviews,

daily gripes, and the random thoughts of a guy who finally has

the time to pay attention. I’m an observant realist with a deep

appreciation for history, a good quote, and the perspective that

only comes after the career ends. I write to stay sharp, to stay

honest, and to keep the conversation going.

Interesting question you’ve posed. There are several time periods I would like to visit, do a walkabout and chat with people. However, I would not want to actually live in any other specific era. I think we are born at a particular place and time period for a reason. What that reason is, I hope to find out one day.

    1. I always wonder if I am here for a reason or not. My logical brain keeps thinking it is random. There is nothing special about me nor do I think it matters if I existed or not. Actually I have been working on that thought for another post, maybe this week.
