How Do You Really Interact With Blog Posts? (Be Honest)

We all like to think we engage thoughtfully with the content we read online, but do we, really?

If you’re anything like most readers, your interaction with a blog post probably depends on your mood, your time, and how quickly the content hooks you. Some posts grab you instantly. Others lose you halfway through. And sometimes, even when you do read something all the way through, you quietly move on without leaving any trace behind. I will have some early analysis later this week that I already did, and I’m finalizing that post. This is to help dig a bit deeper.

That’s what I want to explore here, not in theory, but in reality.

The Question Behind the Question

Content creators spend hours writing, editing, and shaping posts. But what actually happens on the other side of the screen? Are readers deeply engaged, or just skimming? Are they reacting, or staying silent?

Let’s get honest about it.

Quick Poll

Take a second and answer what actually reflects your behavior:

Please take the poll

No judgment, just patterns.

Why This Matters

Engagement shapes everything:

  • What content gets created
  • What gets visibility
  • What feels worth the effort to write

A post with no comments can still be widely read. A post with lots of likes might not have been fully read. And sometimes the most impactful posts get the least visible feedback.

So the question isn’t just what you do—it’s why you do it.

Your Turn

For this post, try something different:

  • Rate the Post 1-5 stars listed below
  • Leave a comment answering the poll honestly
  • Add a sentence or two explaining why you interact with posts the way you do

Even a short response helps paint a clearer picture of how people actually engage.

Because the gap between what we think readers do—and what they really do—is where things get interesting.

Let’s see what the reality looks like.

About Kevin, I spent 40 years in FinTech before retiring to

Rio de Janeiro to trade software releases for a front-row seat

to the beautiful absurdity of life in Brazil. This blog is my digital

porch, a place for unpolished commentary on book reviews,

daily gripes, and the random thoughts of a guy who finally has

the time to pay attention. I’m an observant realist with a deep

appreciation for history, a good quote, and the perspective that

only comes after the career ends. I write to stay sharp, to stay

honest, and to keep the conversation going.

  1. I truly appreciate every word that goes into a fellow bloggers creation. Some days it’s hard to put together a piece and keep it on track! There are some pieces where I will read them and have to digest them for a bit before I can comment. I respect everything my fellow bloggers have to say and always like to encourage them in our craft. I also learn quite a bit about people and about different topics that I may not have read if they weren’t presented in a blog. For example, Kevin, I learned so much from you about the business tech field that I knew mainly nothing about before. I was in management for over 20 years but never crossed into that dude if the business.

    1. Thanks glad you liked it and that I can help. I agree I follow people from all over the world. It is very cool to see what they do, places they go and food they at. There is some real talent out there. Oh Yea, I saw the promo for the Michael Jackson movie.

  2. That side of the business…can’t type today!

If something resonates with me in a particular way, I would comment. Occasionally a blog post can make me see things in a different way; a way I hadn’t considered previously. Mostly though, I would avoid commenting if I strongly disagreed with the post; I just don’t have it in me to be confrontational, even online.

    1. I see it the same way. If something seems a little off for me I would mention where I disagree but it is minor and usually not something confrontational. I don’t really see anything in this arena that makes me stop and go “wow that’s nuts” but I also don’t seek those types of blogs because there is nothing gained.
