The Long Way Home: A Final Look Back
So, there it is, the journey from a twenty-year-old kid finding his feet to a retired tech guy watching the world go by from Brazil. Looking back, the road has been remarkably kind. There were a few bumps along the way, of course, but honestly? I have nothing to complain about.
These days, my biggest hurdle isn’t a corporate deadline or a technical glitch; it’s the distance between two worlds. I made my first trip back to the States in February for three weeks. Initially, I thought I’d make that trek twice a year, but the reality of international travel and finances, feel free to contribute to the “Retired Guy Fund” anytime! has me rethinking the math. I think the sweet spot is a one-long-two-month stay once a year.
It’s a strange balance to strike. My parents are still there, and I have a son and a daughter, and I miss more than words can really capture. And then there’s the role of being a grandfather, a title that carries a weight and a joy all its own.
Sometimes, we have to make the hard choice to do what is best for our own souls, to find the place that offers genuine peace of mind. But that peace comes with a cost. I’m planning my next return for October and November, trying to navigate that delicate line between family and the reality of a retirement budget.
We have the beauty of technology, of course. Video calls bridge the gap, and I know my kids have busy, full lives. When I’m there, I’m well aware I’m the “old guy” hanging around; they can’t exactly drop everything for two months to entertain me. The travel itself is a grueling, full-day marathon, but I’ll make it work. If they ever truly need me, I’ll be on a plane in a heartbeat. No questions asked.
