This experience reminded me of the quote from Kramer on Seinfeld.
“Jerry, you stand on the threshold to the magical world of sensual delights that most men dare not dream of.”
In the US or maybe in the rest of the world, it is called a Brazilian Steakhouse. In Brazil, it is called a restaurant or churrascaria (pronounced shoo-has-ka-REE-ah), which comes from the word churrasco, meaning barbecue.
Most traditional churrascarias operate on a rodízio system, where servers (called passadores) circulate the dining room continuously bringing large skewers of various cuts of grilled meat directly to your table.
Last week we went to Rio Brasa. It was stepping into a meat lover’s paradise, and by far the best I have had so far. To start out, they loaded the table with Pastal (I ate 5), Yuca fries, French fries, Portuguese chips, and garlic bread, all we wanted. Then the fun started, and we flipped our cards over for green, which means game on!
From that moment on, it was a parade of meat skewers on a constant stream, non-stop. Any type you wanted from filet, flank steak, skirt steak, roast, picanha (the top for a steak house), pork, you name it, and it just kept coming. In fact, it came so fast and so constantly, it was quicker than we could eat it. It was the most perfectly cooked and flavored meat I have ever had.
When we thought we could go no further, the card flipped to red, which means stop, kind of. The wait staff just smiled and then brought the baked banana in cinnamon. Then they noticed we needed the cooked pineapple in sugar and cinnamon, which were all amazing. Then we figured we were done.
At this point, I was seriously considering taking off my pants when my son said, “Hey, wait, we did not get the baked cheese.” Well, we could not leave without the baked cheese! It came drizzled with honey.
Now, let me say what must be said of the service. It was the best, top shelf. We had what I would consider a permanent wait staff that stayed by the table to flag a server over the second we needed anything, which never happened because they were ahead of the game. Also, in true Brazilian fashion, the wait staff was fun and personable, like you were at a friend’s house, making us laugh and telling jokes.
It was another great dining experience, the food and service were a 10, and I can’t wait to go back.
