Daily Writing Prompt 21-Jun: What’s your top tip to be successful in life?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

What’s your top tip to be successful in life?

Before answering that question, I think you first have to define what success means.

When I was younger, my definition looked a lot like what many of us are taught to pursue. Get an education. Find a good job. Work hard. Earn promotions. Make more money. Buy the bigger house, the nicer car, and collect the symbols that society often associates with success.

There is nothing inherently wrong with those goals. They can provide comfort, security, and opportunities. For many years, I chased some of them myself.

What I learned, however, is that success is a moving target when it is defined by things. The next promotion leads to another promotion. The bigger house leads to wanting something bigger. The finish line keeps moving, and if you’re not careful, you can spend years running toward it without ever asking whether it was your race to begin with.

As I got older, my definition of success began to change.

I stopped measuring my life by titles, performance reviews, and career milestones. In fact, during the last decade or so of my working life, I rarely paid attention to performance reviews. It wasn’t because I stopped caring about doing a good job. It was because I realized I no longer wanted my sense of worth tied to the next promotion or someone else’s evaluation of my success.

What mattered more was whether I was content with my days.

Was I doing work I could live with? Did I have enough? Was I enjoying my life rather than constantly preparing to enjoy it someday?

Retirement gave me an even clearer perspective. Looking back, the things that brought the most satisfaction were rarely the things I purchased or achieved. They were the experiences, the relationships, the memories, and the freedom to spend more of my life doing things that mattered to me.

If I could offer one piece of advice, it would be this:

Get an education. Develop skills. Work hard. Build a life you can be proud of.

But don’t let someone else define success for you.

Take the time to decide what “enough” looks like in your own life.

For some people, success may be building a company, working 70-hour weeks, and reaching the top of their profession. For others, it may be a modest home, time with family, travel, a quiet life, or simply waking up each morning content with where they are.

Neither path is more valid than the other.

The mistake is spending years pursuing someone else’s version of success, only to realize later that it wasn’t what you wanted at all.

For me, success wasn’t found in having more. It was found in realizing I already had enough.

And once I understood that, life became a lot more enjoyable.
