About a month ago, I stopped doing my Blog Post of the Week because I realized I wasn’t finding enough new writers. It wasn’t because I wanted to stop or because I didn’t have the time. I had simply reached the point where I could only do so much by sifting through the Reader or searching for blogs I could subscribe to. That narrowed both my focus and my ability to discover new voices. I knew I was probably missing a lot of great blogs.

So I decided to solve the problem, drawing on decades of management experience, my technical background, and a little help from today’s AI tools.

My thinking was simple. Blogs with lots of likes and comments are probably engaging, but how do you consistently find them? That led me to tags. If tags help organize content and reflect trends, then some tags must naturally attract more attention than others.

I asked Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini the same question: Which WordPress tags generate the most activity, visibility, and engagement? Their answers were remarkably similar. Rather than accepting any one list, I compared the results, identified areas of agreement, removed duplicates, and created a list based on that consensus.

I wanted to do this based on real data rather than guesses. I am flagging this to be upfront: WordPress.com doesn’t publish exact like/view/comment counts per tag, but it does publish a curated list of its highest-traffic tags and shows follower counts for the top trending ones. Here’s what’s real based on that question.

Confirmed trending tags with follower counts (from wordpress.com/tags right now): Dailyprompt (6.1M followers), Travel (2M), Art (2M), Photography (1.9M), Blogging (1.7M), Summer (1.5M).

My next challenge was figuring out how to automatically find posts using those tags. I wrote the basic structure of a Python script and used Claude to help build it. I didn’t know the APIs or the overall WordPress environment, so I provided my script, explained what I was trying to accomplish, and let the AI help fill in the missing pieces.

After running it, I uncovered a few bugs. I fed the results back into Claude, explained what I was seeing, shared the errors I encountered, and pointed out examples where things had been missed. The process became a collaboration between my experience and the AI tools. It really wasn’t any different from my years before retirement, when I’d work with a development team to solve a technical problem. I brought the requirements and experience. The AI helped with the implementation.

I also discovered that searching every popular tag produced far too many results. So I narrowed the list to the tags that were both highly active and aligned with my own interests.

Beginning this Saturday, I’ll use this process to review posts published Monday through Friday. The goal is to showcase the most engaging posts in each category, helping readers discover great writers they might otherwise have missed. Below is the first Sunday post to highlight some popular posts.
