Daily Writing Prompt 28-Aug: The Weirdest Coincidence Ever? Seinfeld and the Big Coincidence Debate

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Seinfeld, The Statue, Seinfeld Season 2, coincidences, Elaine Benes, Rava, George Costanza, Kramer, television, comedy, pop culture

Well, mine would have to be this question being the coincidence.

I watched the Seinfeld episode “The Statue” the other day, and being the Seinfeld nerd that I am, this question immediately reminded me of the banter between Elaine and Rava about coincidences.

Elaine is editing Rava’s book, and Rava is, well, a little odd. And dark. The backstory involves a statue George wants and the suspicion that Rava’s boyfriend, Ray, stole it from Jerry’s apartment.

The episode is worth watching just for the Kramer part. But the argument about whether there can be a big coincidence or a small coincidence is classic Seinfeld.

Elaine: “But it is quite a coincidence.”

Rava: “Yes, that’s all, a coincidence!”

Elaine: “A big coincidence.”

Rava: “Not a big coincidence. A coincidence!”

Elaine: “No, that’s a big coincidence.”

Rava: “That’s what a coincidence is! There are no small coincidences and big coincidences!”

Elaine: “No, there are degrees of coincidences.”

Rava: “No, there are only coincidences! Ask anyone!”

And that, apparently, settles the matter.

Or doesn’t.

Either way, I have now managed to experience my own Seinfeld coincidence by being asked about coincidences immediately after watching an episode about coincidences.

Season 2, Episode 6 — “The Statue.”
