The Seinfeld Post About Nothing

Reading Time: 2 minutes

What is the deal with a routine? I have a routine. Every week, I stick to the core themes: Brazil, retirement, and books. It’s the “Big Three.” I sprinkle in a daily quote here, a prompt there, and suddenly—poof—I’m a writer! I’m active! I’m in the mix!

But now and then, you have to throw a wrench in the gears. You have to go off-topic just for the fun of it. We’re doing a topic about nothing. Because let’s face it, sometimes the “nothing” is the most interesting part of the “something.”

I rank Seinfeld right up there in the Pantheon of comedy. It’s on the Mount Rushmore with Cheers, Friends, and MASH*, but let’s be honest: this show had a completely different vibe. It’s the kind of show that probably wouldn’t even get on TV today.

And remember, the show almost didn’t stick! Season one? Not great. But NBC took a flyer on it. I remember at the time it aired opposite Home Improvement—you know, “Tool Time”—and that was a massive hit. I used to watch Seinfeld in between repeats of Tim Taylor, but by season two, I made the executive decision. I made the switch. I was a Seinfeld guy.

Seinfeld ran for 9 seasons and produced exactly 180 episodes. For me, what made the show great is that many episodes have an everyday, real-life feel. There has been more than one time I just shook my head and said this is a Seinfeld episode. A mean, come on, you had to be in a restaurant waiting for a seat as they took others before you. There must be a time when you had a reservation that was not met, I mean, that is the most important part of the reservation, the holding.

Here are my favorite shows, character and a few lines I love.

So with that introduction, what is your favorite episode, character, and line? Don’t ignore it. I don’t want to say “I don’t like your demeanor.”

Favorite Episodes

The contest

The Alternate Side

The Visa

The Fire

Favorite Character

George. I know Kramer is the logical choice, but George is just so neurotic, cheap, a pain in the a**, and the way he makes up elaborate lies, well, it’s not a lie if you believe it.

Favorite lines

Jerry – But I don’t want to be a pirate

Kramer- Elaine says, “I save my legs,” and Kramer replies, “Not every day.”

Elaine – But that’s my ass in your window

George – You know I always wanted to pretend I was an architect
