Share a hobby you’ve picked up recently — what got you into it?
Well, this is an interesting question for me right now because my latest hobby is something I thought I had left behind: web development.
I have a technology background, and I’ve always enjoyed working with computers and coding. So I decided it was time to brush up on my HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and get back into doing some front-end development.
But, as usual, I couldn’t just make it a hobby.
I’ve decided to take it a step further and see if I can turn it into a small business. I’m building simple, clean, practical websites for small businesses and individuals who need a professional web presence without all the complicated bells and whistles.
I’m calling it Old Guy Web Works, which seemed appropriate. I’m an old guy, I work on the web, and apparently I have a sense of humor about it.
I’m building everything myself and hosting the sites through GitHub. I’m also working on my own website as the starting point. It’s still very much a work in progress, and I currently have two other sites in development that I’m building for my portfolio.
The idea is pretty simple: front-end websites without unnecessary complexity. If someone needs a clean website that tells people who they are, what they do, and how to contact them, that’s something I can build.
I’m hoping to have everything ready to go later this year. I want to finish a few portfolio sites first so people can actually see what I can do before I start asking them to trust me with their websites.
And that’s where this hobby has taken me. What started as “I should brush up on HTML and CSS” has turned into “Maybe I should start building websites for other people.”
