Which relationship has taught you the most about yourself?
The relationship that has taught me the most about myself is probably the relationship I have with myself.
I think most of life is a collection of experiences. What happens to us matters, but how we adapt to those experiences is what determines whether we grow, stay the same, or sometimes go backward.
Our first relationships are with our parents and immediate family. They teach us how to see the world before we are old enough to question much of it. Then come our friends, who test some of those early lessons and help us begin to figure out which parts of what we were taught actually belong to us.
As adults, the relationships change. A wife, coworkers, friends, and the people we meet along the way all bring something different. Some reinforce what we already believe. Others challenge it. Sometimes they work together, and sometimes they completely conflict. Figuring out how to deal with those conflicts is part of what makes us who we are.
Then there is the school of hard knocks. There are lessons you don’t learn from parents, teachers, friends, or a spouse. You learn them by making a mistake, getting knocked down, getting back up, and realizing that you probably should have known better the first time.
When I look back, I don’t think I can point to one relationship and say, “That one taught me the most.” My early experiences with my parents and family mattered enormously, but eventually I spent more of my life with my wife, friends, coworkers, and the people I encountered along the way. Each relationship had a different kind of importance.
Maybe that’s the point.
We aren’t really shaped by one relationship. We are shaped by the accumulation of them. Each person leaves something behind, sometimes a lesson, sometimes a scar, sometimes a laugh, and sometimes a perspective we didn’t have before.
And eventually, all of those experiences become part of the relationship that matters most: the one we have with ourselves.
The funny thing is, that relationship is the one we never get to leave.
