My Worst Travel Experiences: Road Trips, Storms, and Canceled Flights

What’s the Worst Travel Experience You’ve Ever Had?

There are a couple that were not great.

The first was simply the method and duration that made it something I would never want to try again. When we relocated from New Hampshire to Florida, we drove. It involved one U-Haul truck and three cars, making a four-vehicle caravan. It took 2.5 days and included eight people, two dogs, and four cats. This was not fun.

On another occasion, flying back to New Hampshire from Florida, we flew into a storm and had to circle the airport a few times because of all the planes trying to land. That can make you a bit edgy!

Then there was the time we landed in Miami from Brazil, only to discover that our connecting flight to Tampa had been canceled. We had to rent a car and drive to Tampa, about five hours, which is not much fun after flying all night.

All different experiences, each with its own annoyances. None was truly horrible, but none is something I would wish on anybody.

What’s the worst travel experience you’ve ever had? I’d love to hear your stories in the comments.

Yes I certainly agree those were terrible. Bad airplane landing experiences can be terrible. My younger son and I experienced an emergency landing once. It was on our trip from Dallas, Texas to San Juan in Costa Rica. The plane was leaking fuel. We thought we have to land in a field, but we were able to make it back to Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. There were hundreds of firetrucks waiting for us there.

    1. That one sounds scary. Yesterday on the Tampa to Miami the guy next to me was watching a gun video; cleaning and loading. It was a bit stupid and odd at the same time. Nothing of course came of it but he should know better.

  2. The drive from New Hampshire to Florida? Oh no no no. That had to be horrific!

    1. Brutal! My mom screaming at my dad over a walkie talkie, a massive caravan with dogs and cat’s like Noah’s ark. Never again.

Well Kevin, you know that I have had the worst travel Karma in the world. Delays, cancellations, re-routes – probably every third trip.

But. The one that stands out is a Delta (Doesn’t Ever Leave The Airport, ifykyk) flight from New York to Tampa. An hour in I feel the plane turn … hard. Looking up I see that one of the FAs is holding the corded phone to her ear, with her back hard against the cockpit door … and is paler than the average English dude. Wide eyed and visibly spooked. Uh oh … I’ve flown way too much over the years and this was the most freaked out I’d EVER seen an FA.

So, it’s announced we’re returning to our departure point … as we come in to land, I could see fire engines, police, ambulances on the runway … and they spin up and chased us down the runway.

It turned out that a baggage hold door hadn’t been secured correctly (or had failed). We’d basically been bombing parts of Pennsylvania with people’s checked luggage. A lot of it.

As I got off the plane, I got snagged by a Delta representative which flight I’d like to be booked on that same day. I “noped” right out of there …

    1. Well that one is the winner. I did have an odd one yesterday. On the flight from Tampa to Miami the guy next to me was watching videos on how to assemble and clean a gun. I’m getting a bit antsy hoping he is jus stupid, he was. We landed fine and the rest of the trip was easy sailing or flying. I did spend an hour while in Tampa to see Jay and Sherneatha. I don’t miss it. I’m sure you don’t either. Enjoy retirement.

When I was a kid we moved from the east coast to California and back twice. All four ways we drove. As a kid I loved it, staying in motels and eating in diners, stopping tocsee some sights, but my parents must have hated it.

    1. Sure, as a kid, it is a blast! Being a driver not so much! hahaha

      1. I can’t even imagine
