Topic: The “Free Estimate” Miracle
What marketing genius pioneered this concept? “Yes, we’ll come to your house to discuss rodent removal, and the estimate is free!”. Hold on, Timmy—let me make sure I’ve got this straight. Your big sales pitch to get me to hire you is a promise that you won’t charge me for the privilege of telling me how much money you want to take from me?.
Oh, wait, I forgot the “teaser”: If I actually hire you, you’ll graciously apply that non-existent estimate fee as a credit to my balance. How generous. It’s like a store offering a “free look” at a price tag.
This brings me to that other buzzword I can’t stand: “full transparency.”. Translation: “I’m using big words to convince you I’m not lying to you.”. Why would anyone pay a person just to hear what they might charge?. For the love of all logic, how did “I won’t charge you to talk to me” become a revolutionary selling point?.
