What’s a movie or book that inspired you to travel?
I wish there were something I could point to. In fact, it’s something I wish I had learned and done when I was younger. Travel was never really a consideration.
When I was young, my parents never traveled. I don’t really recall even taking a family vacation, probably because they couldn’t afford it. As I got older, life became school, then a job, then a career. Once I started down that path, my parents finally had the means to travel, but by then I was caught up in work, raising a family, and building a career.
Looking back, I wish I had traveled more. I think it would have been just as valuable, if not more valuable, than starting college or going straight to work. I never really traveled until I remarried in 2015 and made my first trip to Brazil. In fact, Brazil is really the only destination outside the United States that I’ve ever visited. I had been to a handful of U.S. states, but nothing prepared me for the experience of seeing another country. I loved coming here so much that I moved here after I retired a year ago.
My goal now is to find a way to make a few more trips during retirement and create memories while I still can. There are several places in Europe I would love to see.
My advice to younger people is simple: travel before anything else. The experiences and perspective you’ll gain are worth more than anything you’ll learn in a classroom. An education can prepare you for a career, but travel has a way of preparing you for life.
