What’s a Promise You Made to Yourself That You’ve Actually Kept?

I don’t think I’ve ever made a promise to myself. Not one that I kept or failed to keep. Honestly, I’ve never really understood the concept. Making a promise to yourself has always seemed a little odd to me. It is not my philosophy.

Life just happened, and I went with the flow. I hoped for the best and adjusted as necessary. I never had a list of promises or goals that I felt I had to accomplish.

I suppose that’s what people now call a bucket list. I never even heard that term until I was well into my career, raising a family, and living life.

Even today I could say, “I’d love to see Europe.” But that’s more of a wish than a promise. It may never happen because I simply may never be able to afford the trip.

That’s probably why I’ve never been a fan of making lists of things I hope to do someday. For me, they often feel more like dreams than plans. There’s nothing wrong with dreaming, but I’ve always preferred to deal with today rather than build tomorrow around a list of promises.

Maybe that’s why questions like this make me stop and think.

I’ve never really lived my life by promises I’ve made to myself.

I’ve lived it by adapting to whatever came next.

And, looking back, I think that’s worked out just fine.
