What’s the best local dish you’ve ever eaten while traveling?
When I first came to Brazil, there were several dishes I enjoyed, but two experiences have really stood out.
The first is the traditional Brazilian churrascaria. After trying several, my favorite is Rio Brasa. The quality of the beef, the variety of cuts, and the incredible selection of Brazilian side dishes make it one of the best dining experiences I’ve had anywhere. Beef is my favorite so this was an easy choice.

My everyday favorite, though, is much simpler: Pão de Queijo, or Brazilian cheese bread.
This is classic everyday Brazilian food. You’ll find it everywhere, from bakeries to coffee shops, and it’s one of those foods that’s almost impossible to stop eating once you start. I honestly don’t think I’ve met anyone who didn’t like it.
If you’re visiting Brazil and want the full traditional dining experience, a Brazilian steakhouse is hard to beat. Watching perfectly cooked cuts of meat carved directly from skewers at your table is part of the experience, and it’s one I’ll never get tired of.

Honorable mentions:** Stroganoff (beef or chicken), Pastel, and Coxinha.
- Brazilian stroganoff (estrogonofe) is quite different from the traditional Russian version. It’s typically made with cream, tomato sauce or ketchup, and served with white rice and batata palha (crispy potato sticks).
- Pastel is a deep-fried pastry with fillings like cheese, ground beef, chicken, or pizza.
- Coxinha is a teardrop-shaped fried croquette filled with shredded chicken (often with catupiry cheese).
