Ok, here we go again. Back on June 6, I wrote about a similar prompt; the difference was “Your country vs. another country.” The wording wasn’t exactly the same, but close enough.

Since I’m American by birth and now live in Brazil, I thought I’d add something from the other side of that comparison: Thanksgiving.

It’s one American tradition I genuinely miss. I enjoyed it growing up, and there’s something about having a day centered around family, food, and being thankful that is uniquely American. I know the whole Indian and Pilgrim thing is never portrayed exactly, but it makes for a fun story, minus the death, killing, and slaughtering that comes later.

I don’t celebrate it anymore, mostly because everyone is scattered and, honestly, the tradition lost some of its appeal when it became, “Let’s just have it catered by the local grocery store.”

My grandmother would have lost her mind if she heard that.

She believed Thanksgiving involved spending hours in the kitchen, enough food to feed a small army, and probably a turkey that took longer to cook than some of my childhood friendships lasted.
