Ok, here we go again. Back on June 6, I wrote about a similar prompt; the difference was “Your country vs. another country.” The wording wasn’t exactly the same, but close enough.

Since I’m American by birth and now live in Brazil, I thought I’d add something from the other side of that comparison: Thanksgiving.

It’s one American tradition I genuinely miss. I enjoyed it growing up, and there’s something about having a day centered around family, food, and being thankful that is uniquely American. I know the whole Indian and Pilgrim thing is never portrayed exactly, but it makes for a fun story, minus the death, killing, and slaughtering that comes later.

I don’t celebrate it anymore, mostly because everyone is scattered and, honestly, the tradition lost some of its appeal when it became, “Let’s just have it catered by the local grocery store.”

My grandmother would have lost her mind if she heard that.

She believed Thanksgiving involved spending hours in the kitchen, enough food to feed a small army, and probably a turkey that took longer to cook than some of my childhood friendships lasted.

  1. I loved Thanksgiving when I was a kid. Going to my aunt and uncle’s house, watching the parade, eating good food, waiting for my aunt’s famous chocolate silk pie.

Neil and I do cater now, but it is only the two of us. I still watch the parade, but I have to get up before dawn here in Hawaii to catch it live.

  2. Thanksgiving is my wife’s favorite holiday too. When my wife and I moved to Sweden in 1994 (moved back in my case) with our one year old there were other Americans moving there as well. We worked for the same company, ABB Robotics. The holiday they wanted to celebrate was Thanksgiving so we had a Thanksgiving feast at our apartment.

    1. I liked it when it was relaxed and comfortable. I remember all stores were closed too. Now it is like a day waiting for a starting gun to fire and shop.

  3. […] Living as an American expat in Brazil makes you look at your native traditions in a whole new light. Kevin reflects on the uniquely American joy of Thanksgiving, centering on food, family, and gratitude. Read his humorous memories of his grandmother, who believed the holiday required hours of kitchen labor and a turkey that cooked longer than some childhood friendships lasted.👉 Read the full post here […]
