Quote of the Day – Epictetus

Epictetus

“Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not.”

I think this speaks to the lives of many people—myself included, at least to some extent. I wouldn’t say I ever “spoiled” anything, but I can see how it can go to extremes for some. Looking back now, especially in retirement, it all comes down to perspective.

Stop chasing things.

Find happiness where you are.

Be grateful for what you already have.

Before long, the ride is over, and you’re left wondering whether all that chasing ever made life any better. At some point, you have to stop wanting more and start appreciating the moment you’re in.

That’s where the real peace is.

About Kevin, I spent 40 years in FinTech before retiring to

Rio de Janeiro to trade software releases for a front-row seat

to the beautiful absurdity of life in Brazil. This blog is my digital

porch, a place for unpolished commentary on book reviews,

daily gripes, and the random thoughts of a guy who finally has

the time to pay attention. I’m an observant realist with a deep

appreciation for history, a good quote, and the perspective that

only comes after the career ends. I write to stay sharp, to stay

honest, and to keep the conversation going.

  1. Such a simple reflection. I know I should chase this notion rather than try to cling on to the frenetic merry go round each day.

    Thank you!

    1. It get’s us all. I spent a working life chasing things and then about 12 years ago I realized it was wasted time money and effort. I scaled it way back and have a much better piece of mind. My last 10 years of work my boss would say “lets go have your yearly review.” My response was “do I still have a job and get paid next year.” he said “yes” I said “review over. ” I never read one of them

      1. Bravo to your honesty! Standing ovation for your reaction!

  2. Absolutely love that quote, one of my favourites and so much truth to it too. Being able to be satisfied with what we have is something that can truly bring us so much happiness in life. Many of us are miserable because we always want more.

    1. You can never satisfy the chase. Maybe for tomorrow
