What Makes Me Nervous

Reading Time: 2 minutes
Daily writing prompt
What makes you nervous?

If you have kids, you are always nervous. Two of my three live far from me, and not a day goes by that I don’t think of them and how they are doing. They are adults with jobs and kids, but as a parent, you are never without some anxiety about your kids. Even the one still living at home, navigating life, school, and daily challenges, makes me nervous, and you have to let them solve problems and work things out. It is part of growth, but you are always nervous.

From a personal perspective, as we age, I’m nervous about living on a tighter budget and my general health. Just this past week, I got a pretty bad eye infection, multiple antibiotics, and doctor visits, but health-related issues make me nervous.

Watching what happens on the world stage and daily is reason enough to be nervous. I wake up every day, and the first thing that comes to mind is “See last week’s daily prompt. I could say” what nut launched a nuclear weapon. It is bad enough that there are constant wars. So many things make me nervous, but I put them in perspective, try to put them out of my mind, and move on with my day.

About Kevin, I spent 40 years in FinTech before retiring to

Rio de Janeiro to trade software releases for a front-row seat

to the beautiful absurdity of life in Brazil. This blog is my digital

porch, a place for unpolished commentary on book reviews,

daily gripes, and the random thoughts of a guy who finally has

the time to pay attention. I’m an observant realist with a deep

appreciation for history, a good quote, and the perspective that

only comes after the career ends. I write to stay sharp, to stay

honest, and to keep the conversation going.

  1. Ah! To be 40 again! I’m glad that, like the hippie generation, those days for me are gone. Being nearly twice your age, I cannot recall how many times I wrote the same or similar questions in my journals. We have four children, all of them successful, all of them older than you, and still, they remain our children, or pivot of anxieties as each one traverses a new obstacle or tragedy. Our youngest grandchild’s wife is having their first baby in a couple of weeks: May 1 (uno de Mayo), a set date for a delivery by knife. I wasn’t given the reason why, but I worry over it, as new worries replace the old. Our first child, born in 1967 (when she and I were 16 and 15, respectively), is now approaching retirement age. I worry about the mental aspects and how he will adjust. As to the grandchildren and beyond, the world has set the stage for them to be sacrificed to the gods of war. Anyway…if you learn how to put it all into perspective, give me a hint, won’t you? The formula must be very esoteric, because all that I’ve seen in the maelstrom of humanity is the same repeat performances, decade after decade. Through thirteen sitting presidents, there is nothing new under the sun, or as the Weepies so aptly put it, “The World Spins Madly On.” One day at a time, my friend, one day at a time!

    1. Well hold up a second, I’m 63 so if you are twice that I want to know how you do it 🙂 congratulations on the new coming grandchild, I have two. I try to think or hope cooler heads will prevail on the world stage. I still have some hope we will collectively make better choices and for my kids I hope I did enough to prepare them to be resilient. Other than that I try to keep it in perspective, stay in the moment and not worry about what has happened or could happen and go with the flow. For the 13 sitting presidents I would assume you are counting some twice for two terms. The current one, well lets not go down that path. It is always one day at a time, it can’t ever be more or less. Thanks for the note, much appreciated.

      1. Ah! 🙂 63. I read your bio that said something about being 40, or did I misread it? Probably. In any case, time will tell all things. (And yes, I do count the two terms individually.) Cheers.

      2. Ahh , 40 years of my work life came to an end last August. I officially retired!

  2. A couple of quotes by Cooper in Interstellar come to mind. “When you become a parent, one thing becomes abundantly clear. And that’s that you want to make sure your children feel safe”. “Once you’re a parent, you’re the ghost of your children’s future”.

    1. Good quotes, thanks. I really like that movie. I think I watched it three times.
