What’s a piece of technology you’re convinced will exist in 20 years?
Most of today’s technology will probably still be around in 20 years. The real question is how this technology changes lives, our way of life, and employment. I think things like the internet will still be here; that goes without saying. Self-driving cars will likely continue to expand and improve.
I do think the biggest change, and one that will continue to expand in ways we are just starting to see, is the advancement of AI. Most people only know it in its early stages and what can be done with chatbots and large language models. I think it will grow into more advanced uses that will eliminate some jobs but also create others. That’s what automation has always done. This will increasingly move into white-collar fields, including legal, medical, and security, to name a few.
I don’t think technology has a shelf life and simply goes away. It typically changes slowly, almost unnoticeably, like records to cassettes, to CDs, and then streaming. The big difference now is the speed of change and advancement. The real question isn’t what technology will still be around in 20 years. It’s how much it will change, and whether we’ll be able to keep up.
