Which outdated technology do you miss the most, and why?

Believe it or not, I miss vinyl. I know that sounds odd, and I really don’t use it anymore, but I was missing it even back in the early 2000s.

I owned a DJ company. I had several rigs going, handling a lot of private parties, weddings, and even some small club work. At one point, we did close to 80–100 functions a year. Things had already migrated to CDs by then, but I still had crates of records, 12″ singles, and 45s.

I always liked this media. No question it was a Pain In The ASS lugging them in and out, but it seemed so authentic to the work. They were easy to see and queue up, and mixing was just more fun. You can slow the spin with your hand; you can feel the record, and the artwork on the sleeve is cool. You could even stop and back up the record to the perfect starting point.

When two records are going at the same time, mixing right in, the sound is amazing—people sense it, even if they’ve never heard it before. You control the floor with no break, and people just keep moving before they even know a new song is playing.

Honestly, the sound was more authentic. I’m no audiophile by any means, but CDs sound a little too crisp and perfect. Sometimes that little crackle adds to the feel of the room and the music.

It is authentic.
