A Note from the 19th Floor

I’m Kevin, a retired tech pro now living my best life in Rio de Janeiro. Whether I’m driving my wife crazy, working from the 19th floor, or stopping at a beach bar for a drink, my days are full. I read a lot of blogs and reviews to find the best of the best for you, and I’m glad you’re along for the journey.

About Kevin, I spent 40 years in FinTech before retiring to

Rio de Janeiro to trade software releases for a front-row seat

to the beautiful absurdity of life in Brazil. This blog is my digital

porch, a place for unpolished commentary on book reviews,

daily gripes, and the random thoughts of a guy who finally has

the time to pay attention. I’m an observant realist with a deep

appreciation for history, a good quote, and the perspective that

only comes after the career ends. I write to stay sharp, to stay

honest, and to keep the conversation going.

  1. What kind of music to you listen to? Has any of your musical tastes changed since moving to Brazil?

    1. Good question. Since my music tastes formed in the mid 70s it is classic rock; AC/DC, Eagles, Zeppelin and also Motown is fantastic. As an adult I owned a mobil DJ company so I was pretty deep in the top 40 hits house, dance, techno, hip-hop etc. but not anymore. Brazil is very interesting, anytime you get in a cab/taxi, uer or in a mall they are hooked on pop 80s music. It is everywhere so it is like being in a time machine. However I do catch the music that is part of the culture, Samba and the rhythm is awesome and I have heard some of the Brazilian musicians and the music is quite good. I just don’t understand the words but I like the beat of music more than the words anyway.

      1. Excellent!! See I suspected the music scene might be different in Brazil. Love that the 80s is alive and well there! Lol So cool that you had a DJ business!!

      2. Yes the 80’s is like a time machine and the people love the music. The DJ business I stopped about 20 years ago. Att he time I had three mobile systems and did some local clubs in New Hampshire. It was fun but I have hear “Old Time Rock N Roll” or “Celebration” enough for 200 years!

      3. Oh those songs are just staples in pop culture! I’m giggling at all of the times the dance floor was just flooded when the first notes of those songs started to play.
