What’s the funniest misunderstanding you’ve ever been part of?

Some moments never stop being funny. It happened at work around 2010, and the three of us couldn’t stop laughing for 20 minutes. I still laugh about it today.

It started with a conversation in my cubicle with my coworkers, Jin and Bob. We were talking about the fiscal calendar when Jin said, “fiscal calendar,” but to me it sounded like “physical calendar.”

I looked at him, pointed to the one sitting on my desk, and said, “What do you mean, physical calendar? It’s right here.”

Bob just shook his head, started laughing, and said, “Jin means fiscal, not physical, you jackass.”

That was about 15 years ago, and I still laugh every time I think about it. Even after that, whenever the fiscal calendar came up at work, one of us would inevitably say “physical calendar,” and we’d all start laughing all over again.

  1. What do you mean, physical calendar? It’s right here” is such a perfect deadpan moment, Kevin. And “you jackass” from Bob just seals the whole thing. 😄 Fifteen years later and it’s still funny is the real punchline though, those are the best kind of inside jokes, the ones that outlive the actual mix-up. Still cracking a smile every time “fiscal calendar” comes up sounds like a great way to keep a friendship alive.

    1. Thanks for the reply. Yes I still laugh about that today even if I’m sitting alone thinking about it. I can still picture where we were and how we were positioned in my cube. Hysterical.

      1. I love that you can still picture the exact positioning in the cube that’s the detail that makes it feel real rather than just retold. Some memories earn their permanent spot for exactly that reason. Glad it still gets you every time. 😄 Hysterical is right.

      2. Thanks. I appreciate the reply.
