Reading Time: 2 minutes

What’s one thing you know now that would have saved your younger self a lot of pain?

That is an interesting question, but it also makes me wonder whether it really matters when I knew something. Did I even have a choice at the time? Did things happen because I made certain choices, or did they simply play out the way they were going to play out?

I think life is just random.

There is nothing I know now that I think would have saved my younger self from pain. And I’m not even sure what we mean when we say “pain.” Are we talking about physical pain, mental pain, emotional pain, disappointment, frustration, or something else?

When I look back, I wouldn’t classify most of what happened as painful. I would call it life lessons, learning experiences, or simply ways I grew. Things happened, I dealt with them, and I moved on.

One thing I did learn over the years is to be more tolerant and patient with things. It doesn’t always work, but I have learned to try. Most of those lessons weren’t about avoiding pain. They were more about reducing the aggravation and frustration that comes from expecting life to turn out the way you think it should.

And maybe that’s the bigger lesson.

Life is a series of random events. Things happen. You can plan as carefully as you want, but something can always go wrong. You can spend your life trying to control every outcome, or you can accept that some things are simply beyond your control.

Over the years, I’ve learned to go with the flow as best I can.

Maybe I wouldn’t change the things that happened to my younger self, even if I could. They are part of the person I became. Without those experiences, I might have avoided some frustration, but I also might have missed some of the lessons.

So maybe the question isn’t what do I know now that would have saved my younger self pain?

Maybe the better question is: Would I really want to save him from it?

I’m not sure I would.

  1. Very well said 👍 No matter how carefully we plan things, something can go wrong. Life happens.

  2. I think everything that has happened to us has shaped us because of our reactions. The life lessons we pick up along the way are priceless. Some decisions were right and some regrettably were wrong but they were our choices.

    Well said! 😊
